Hands on buzzers!

What do you get when you combine a niche poetry community with a campy, old-school game show?

Ding ding ding! Time’s up.

It’s Spoken Like a Champion, a night of poetry as you’ve never seen (or heard) it before that will pit three poets against each other in a battle of verbal vigour.

Proudly presented by Going Down Swinging and Melbourne Spoken Word, this is an unmissable night of bizarre challenges, curious questions and hopefully some blood.

Fresh off the back of an award-winning season at Adelaide Fringe, performance poet Scotty Wings takes on the role of host in this wild poetry adventure. He will lead the contestants through a series of bizarre challenges to test the poets’ written and improvisational skills in the newly renovated surrounds of the Brunswick Mechanics Institute. Who knows what the results will be? But we do know you’ll want to join us for the ride.

Our brave panel will feature the talents of Anthony WP O’Sullivan (Melbourne performance poet stalwart), Nikki Viveca (Midsumma Festival 2019 Queer Poetry Slam winner) and international guest Stephanie Dogfoot (SGP). A guest performance by Arielle Cottingham will lather us with spoken word realness.

Event Details: 7–9pm, Friday 26 July at Brunswick Mechanics Institute.

Entry: $20 (including one back issue of Going Down Swinging). Tickets available here.

Don’t forget your loose change: for a gold coin, you can go in the draw to win some fantastic prizes from our generous sponsors, as well as a healthy stack of GDS back issues.

Who will win the first ever Golden Mini Microphone Stand™?* Be there to watch it unfold!

*Not real gold, for budget reasons.

Brunswick Mechanics Institute is a wheelchair accessible venue. If you have any particular access requirements, please let us know by emailing info@goingdownswinging.org.au at least two weeks prior to the event – we want you there.
